Maddie Glazer; a mother, wife, friend, grandmother, but most importantly; one of the greatest philanthropists Iowa has ever been blessed with, as stated by Iowa's former Gov. Terry Branstad. These can all be used to describe a Ms. Maddie Glazer Levitt as years have gone by. She led a lifetime fo love and support not only for her family but also for Drake University.

The Early Years:
Growing up, Maddie lived in a Jewish family that was always very supportive of her. Her father was very active with Drake University and her mother supported their every move. Even as a child, Madelyn had much determination and passino for what she did. At the age of eight years old, she participated in her first philanthropic event as a brownie Girl Scout, which began her many years of philanthropic events such as campaigns, and became her lifelong career.
Maddie attended college at Ohio State University , graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in Education. She then taught high school English for three years before coming to work for Drake University . [1] Although Maddie was a Des Moines native and lived a short ten minutes from Drake University, she had never stepped foot onto campus itself until she became a Board of Trustees member at the University. In one of her question/answer sessions she discussed how even though she had never attended the school, there was nothing that she disliked. That, if she were to name something that she would change, anything she would say would be a lie. She appreciated every aspect and effort that went into Drake University, and always said "how can I help that University be all it can be," was something she always kept in mind when starting a new project. ===Inspiration:===
After working for Drake for ten plus years as a full-time volunteer, she was then given the title as Special Counsel to the President by President Maxwell for all of thehard-work and dedication she had given to the school. [2] Even though she was given this new title, she never let it go to her head. Everything she did in life, she did with hard work, almost as if it were the last thing she would accompolish and how she wanted to be remembered. When asked where her dedication and inspiration for giving came from, her answer came quick and with force; "my father, Ellis Levitt", was her reply. Ellis Levitt served on the Board of Trustees at Drake University and was a Chairman of the Dial Companies, which was later renamed. He always said he had two great loves in life, one being Maddie's mother and the second Drake University. His involvement with the University was a major influence on how Maddie perceived life itself; she continuously stated that she did what she did for him. Her admiration and love for the institution kept her at the University for more years than much of the faculty. [1]
Although she had much success, life is not always easy and sometimes the hard times only make you stronger. A quote she would say was "I think the more you give, the more you get in return in life." Before her death, she went through love, laughs, divorce, and a wonderful and loving family of children and grandchildren who support her throughout. [5]
Madelyn is not only known for her inspirational attitude, but was also highly recognized for the many campaigns she helped facilitate, her first being in the year 1985 where she headed the annual fundraising campaign of United Way of Central Iowa as the first chairwoman. This campaign alone brought in 7.6 million dollars to serve the needs of those less fortunate. After spending much time and effort with the United Way campaign, she then moved on and headed one of Drake University's campaigns, lasting from 1989-1994, her first campaign for the University. She helped raise more than 130 million dollars, 5.4 million dollars being her own. [3]
She was one of three to be inducted on that day. Before her death, she got the chance to accept the Drake Philanthropy award at the age of 83. According to former Gov. She appreciated every aspect and effort that went into Drake University and always said "how can I help that University be all it can be," was something she always kept in mind when starting a new project.

Inspiration:
After working for Drake for ten plus years as a full-time volunteer, she was then given the title as special counsel to the president by President Maxwell for all of thehard-work and dedication she had given to the school. Even though she was given this new title, she never let it go to her head. Everything she did in life, she did with hard work, almost as if it were the last thing she would accompolish and how she wanted to be remembered. When asked where her dedication and inspiration for giving came from, her answer came quick and with force, "my father, Ellis Levitt", was her reply. Ellis Levitt served on the Board of Trustees at Drake University and was a Chairman of the Dial Companies, which was later renamed. He always said he had two great loves in life, one of which being Maddie's mother and the second Drake University. His involvement with the University was a major influence on how Maddie perceived life itself and when living she continuously stated that she did what she did for him. Her admiration and love for the institution kept her at the University for more years than much of the faculty.

Climbing the Ladder:
Although she had much success, life is not always easy and sometimes the hard times only make you stronger. A quote she would say was "I think the more you give, the more you get in return in life," Before her death she went through love, laughs, divorce, and a wonderful and loving family of children and grandchildren who support her throughout.

Madelyn is not only known for her inspirational attitude but was also highly recognized for the many campaigns she helped facilitate, her first being in the year 1985 where she headed the annual fundraising campaign of United Way of Central Iowa as the first chairwoman.
Awards and Achievements
During her many years, commitment, and hard work, she climbed the ladder and was given many awards and recognition for her achievements. On April 13, 2000, Maddie was inducted into the Central Iowa Business Hall of Achievement, which recognizes accomplishments of Iowans that have made important contributions to area businesses and industries. She was one of three to be inducted on that day. Before her death, she got the chance to accept the Drake Philanthropy award at the age of 83. According to former Gov. Terry Branstad, "she's truly one of the greatest philanthropist Iowa has ever been blessed with.

As her many years flew by, her life will never be forgotten. She will always be remembered for her impact on Drake University. Drake has been blessed to have Maddie Glazer Levitt as a great philanthropist and supporter.
Originally submitted by: Cara Collins, Drake University, Dec 2, 2010
Origin of the organization:
The Student Activities Board is one of the oldest organizations on campus. It was founded to help students become more involved and become comfortable with Drake University. It helped answer many students' requests to stay active and not become bored. Although SAB may have great ideas to kick-start any boring day, there has also been controversy in the past dealing with faculty taking part and becoming involved with the organization as well. This became public in The Times Delphic in the August of 1987 paper. It caused an uproar that led many students to believe they were just being monitored and teachers thinking they were there to baby-sit them. [1]
Mission Statment:
The Student Activities Board Mission Statement states that its mission is to serve the student body by providing quality entertainment and education programs. It will also strive to encourage involvement and interaction among students and student organizations. [1]
Events:
The Student Activities Board is in charge of putting on special events which can include cultural celebrations, social functions, guest speakers, and concerts, especially for days where nothing has been scheduled. They try to maintain a wide variety of activities on campus tokeep students from all backgrounds, hobbies, and ages involved with Drake University and other students. SAB has anchored many events that will stay a tradition throughout the history of Drake itself. Many of these other events include:
* bands
* carnivals
* comedians
* hypnotists

These are just a few of the events hosted by SAB, many others such as open-air theater and fireworks are also provided to students willing to attend the events. [2]

SAB Board:
The Student Activities Board is made up of multiple committee's to help benefit the school even further. It is broken down into many categories three of which being, relays committee, student union committee, and elections and calendar committee. Although they are all a part of the SAB board, they each have their own individual jobs to provide efficiency and a better Drake experience. [2]

Relays Committee
This committee was formed to help prepare for the Drake Relays, which is an annual outdoor track and field event which is held at Drake University's stadium. The Relay's Committee is in charge of planning and carrying out activities scheduled for that week. Some of these events include street painting, a barbeque, and the Relay's Parade. They are also broken down into three separate sub-committees to help with efficiency. These include activities, parade, and public relations. And, although the Relays are enjoyed by the students, it is also a time for the alum and the surrounding community to enjoy Drake's campus. Even though the track meet is held towards the end of April, many of the events start taking place about three weeks prior. [2]

Student Union Committee
The Student Union Committee is responsible for hiring bands and entertainers as well as coordinating videos. They also help to create publicity for performers who come and entertain everyone on campus. [2]

Elections and Calendar Committee
This SAB committee helps serve the school by coordinating all student body elections and providing much needed information on a variety of activities selected for on campus entertainment to the students. This group of students along with RHA (Residence Hall Association) are two of the major networking systems on campus and provide this information in a variety of ways:
* monthly calendar
* the character generator
* activities hotline
* the national ride board [2]

SAB And YOU!
Even if one doesn't realize the impact the Student Activities Board can have, after being informed of events they have attended put on by SAB, one cannot help but be impressed. SAB has built such a reputation and has students become so involved that it makes everyone feel comfortable. Always remember to just by yourself and have fun!
History:
Religion; many people have their own understanding on what it means but for the beginning times of Drake University and the School of Divinity, it meant having a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Oreon E. Scott Chapel was built to provide a calm and distraction free atmosphere where people could meditate, worship, and have a closer presence with God. Although the chapel was designed to be used as a Christian Chapel, many have used it from a variety of faiths. Faith itself played a key role in the founding of Drake University. Drake's Bible College was well-known with its affiliation with the Disciples of Christ Church. The construction of Oreon E. Scott Chapel and Charles Medbury Hall began in December of 1953. The Chapel was then completed on January 20, 1955 and dedicated on November 8 of that same year. During this period of construction Dean McCaw, head of the bible college, sought to enhance the building and use it to its full potential. It cost a grand total of 40,000 dollars and stands at a height of 14 feet with a diameter of 32 feet. [3]

Name:
The building itself was named after Dr. Oreon E. Scott, donor of the chapel. Dr. Oreon E. Scott was a life member of the Drake board of trustees along with being a leading layman among the Disciples of Christ Church. In the year 1933, he received a Doctor of Laws Honorary Degree as well as created a scholarship fund, a book fund, and a senior award helping to provide many students with the opportunity to experience Drake University for themselves. [5]

Architecure and Symbolism:
The Chapel is located just south of Fitch Hall of Pharmacy, one of the pharmacy buildings, and is connected to Medbury Hall, Drake's Divinity School, by a canopy.

Exterior
Even though the exterior of the Chapel might look a little peculiar at first glance, once one knows the meaning behind it, it is not so bizarre. The shape of the building, a circle, stands for equality, the close-binding fellowship of humanity, and eternity. Many early Christian churches were built this way in order to show the different meaning it contains. It also is built out of brick, which is a distinction between the chapel and the surrounding buildings because the buildings in the vicinity are all made from glass. Oreon E. Scott Chapel also includes a skylight. [4] On tp of this skylight is a sphere in the center of a bronze crown with a cross above the sphere. The sphere itself represents the world and the multiple things surrounding it. [2]

Interior
In the interior of the Chapel, the only natural light provided is that from the skylight which focuses on the communion table being four feet in diameter and is centered in the middle of the building. In entering the chapel, one must decide to move left or right because a screen blocks the view from others as well as light from outside and any draft there may be. Once inside, one can choose from twenty seats lined around a cement slab with a prayer railing the only item between them. A person is able to have the peace and quiet of worshiping without being disturbed even if there are other people in the room because the lighting creates a sense of peace and solitude. However, lights aimed at the stone illuminate the faces of others around and cause them to be shadow figures lighted with radiance, which represents divinity. But there has been a debate where the bronze crown has been placed. It has been missing since the re-roofing in 1981. There is also no alter, pulpit, or any principal seat, creating a feeling of equality before God. [2]

Special Occasion:
Not only has the chapel been used for worship but on Valentine's Day of 1985, a couple was wedded in the Oreon E. Scott Chapel itself. On average a wedding ishosted there once a month, according to Rachel Buckles, secretary to the department of religion and philosophy. The Chapel has also brought in many students from surrounding schools that study the building and marvel at its architectural design. [1]
On tp of this skylight is a sphere in the center of a bronze crown with a cross above the sphere. The sphere itself represents the world and the multiple things surrounding it. [2]
Madelyn Glazer Levitt
Originally submitted by: Cara Collins, Drake University, Dec 2, 2010

At the age of eight years old, she participated in her first philanthropy event as a brownie Girl Scout which began her many years of philanthropy events such as campaigns and became her lifelong career.

College: Career and Schooling:
Maddie attended college at Ohio State University graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in Education. She then taught High School English for three years before coming to work for Drake University . Although Maddie was a Des Moines native and lived a short ten minutes from Drake University, she had never stepped foot onto campus itself until she became a Board of Trustees member at the University. In one of her question/answer sessions she discussed how even though she had never attended the school, there was nothing that she disliked. That if she wer eto name something that she would change, anything she would say would be a lie. She appreciated every aspect and effort that went into Drake University and always said "how can I help that University be all it can be," was something she always kept in mind when starting a new project.

Inspiration:
After working for Drake for ten plus years as a full-time volunteer, she was then given the title as special counsel to the president by President Maxwell for all of the hard-work and dedication she had given to the school.

History:
Religion; many people have their own understanding on what it means but for the beinning times of Drake University and the School of Divinity, it meant having a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It cost a grand total of 40,000 dollars and stand at a height of 14 feet with a diameter of 32 feet.

On tp of this skylight is a sphere in the center of a bronze crown with a cross above the sphere. The sphere itself represents the world and the multiple things surrounding it.

Religion; many people have their own understanding on what it means but for the beinning times of Drake University and the School of Divinity, it meant having a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It cost a grand total of 40,000 dollars and stand at a height of 14 feet with a diameter of 32 feet.

On tp of this skylight is a sphere in the center of a bronze crown with a cross above the sphere. The sphere itself represents the world and the multiple things surrounding it.

History:
Religion; many people have their own understanding on what it means but for the beinning times of Drake University and the School of Divinity, it meant having a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It cost a grand total of 40,000 dollars and stand at a height of 14 feet with a diameter of 32 feet.

Origin of the organization:
The Student Activities Board is one of the oldest organizations on campus. It was founded to help students become more involved and become comfortable with Drake University. It helped answer many students' requests to stay active and not become bored. Although SAB may have great ideas to kick-start any boring day, there has also been contraversy in the past dealing with faculty taking part and becoming involved with the organization as well. This became public in The Times Delphic in the August of 1987 paper. It caused an uproar that led many students to believe they were just being monitored and teachers thinking they were there to baby-sit them.
* bands
* carnivals
* comedians
* hypnotists

These are just a few of the events hosted by SAB, many others such as open-air theater and fireworks are also provided to students willing to attend the events.
SAB Board
The Student Activities Board is made up of multiple committee's to help benefit the school even further. It is broken down into many categories three of which being, relays committee, student union committee, and elections and calendar committee. Although they are all a part of the SAB board, they each have their own individual jobs to provide efficiency and a better Drake experience.

Student Union Committee
The Student Union Committee is responsible for hiring bands and entertainers as well as coordinating videos. They also help to create publicity for performers who come and entertain everyone on campus.

* monthly calendar
* the character generator
* activities hotline
* the national ride board
