Herbert Bohlman

Dr. Bohlman was born in Hortonville, Wisconsin on December 23, 1896. In September 1924 he married Mary Edna McCaull, a Des Moines school teacher. His son, Herbert McCaull Bohlman was born on February 8, 1936. Dean Bohlman died in January, 8 1968. He retired from Drake in 1967. [3]

Education

Herbert Bohlman did his undergraduate work in Lawrence College and received his B. A. degree in 1919. His Graduate Major was Economics. He earned his M.A. in 1922 and finally his Ph.D. degree in 1936 from the University of Wisconsin. At the University of Wisconsin, he had the opportunity to do his graduate work under such outstanding American economists as Richard T. Ely, John R. Commons, and William A. Scott. [2]

Involvement

Bohlman was a member of the American Economic Association, Mid-west Economic Association, Delta Sigma Pi, Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu, and the American Academy of Political and Social Science. [2]

Carreer at Drake

Dean Bohlman, with a field in economics, served as a member of the Drake faculty for 43 years beginning in 1924. Dr. Herbert William Bohlman, in his 43 years on the Drake faculty, had served as: assistant professor of economics (1924), professor of economics (1925 and 1964-1967), head of the economics department in the College of Liberal Arts, dean of the Graduate Division (1940) and Dean of the College of Business Administration (1954). He retired as dean of College of Business Administration in 1964 to return to full time teaching for three more years. [1]

Reasearch and PublishingsDr. Bohlman joined the Drake University faculty in 1924. In 1935-1936 he served as research economist with the Twentieth Century Fund, Inc., of New York City while on leave of absence. During the summer of 1936 he made a study of the Iowa labor market under the auspices of the Committee of Social Security of the Social Science Research Council. Publication of the study under the title Iowa Labor Market was financed by the Committee. [2] He also had done research work on Iowa banking, although this study has not been published. On another leave of absence, from 1942 to 1945, he was a principal economist for the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C. His published works include a book “Labor Market in Iowa,” and a high school economics text, “Our Economic Problems,” co-authored with his wife, Edna. [3]
